No, don't buy the doormat. That would suggest that you're intending to stay. You're leaving! If you can't find a place to buy, why not rent? Forget about investing money, (count up how much money you've wasted over the years in storage etc) and invest in yourself instead. Once you've found your new home, you can write a novel about a woman trapped in a ghastly house with a truly obnoxious man. You've got all the material you need at your fingertips.
